Fur – Opulent or Huntress?

February 12th, 2007 · No Comments

Opulence has been one of the key trends this fall/winter season.  Fur, being associated with luxury, is at the forefront of this trend. Some of the fashionable fur items around are made wholly of fur, such as coats and capes, and some items are layered with thick fur trimmings.  Ironically, some of the bold fur looks create more of a hunter image than one of opulence! What do you think? Film star or cavewoman?

Pretty in Purple

February 11th, 2007 · No Comments

Purple is one of the main fashion trends this season.  If you are getting bored with the blacks and greys of the winter opt for this more funky and fun colour for work, casual, or party outfits. Deeper shades of purple are a good choice because they compliment many skin and hair tones as well as giving the slimming effect that dark colours have.  Amethyst and bright violet tones also look good in accessories.  I like purple but personally I’m sticking with blacks and greys because I think they are smarter and sexier. Will anyone else be converting to purple this season?

Big Bulky Bags

February 10th, 2007 · No Comments

Yes!  Oversized bags are in and it’s about time after suffering for years trying to cram everything into teeny weenie handbags that have dominated bag fashion.  Like a lot of other women I like to carry a lot of potentially useful items wherever I go; tissues, lipstick, purse, brolli. These are essentials as far as I’m concerned, so the bulky bag trend is like my knight in shining armour.  (However I do still use smaller elegant handbags for the evening.)  I’m presuming that other women feel the same? Or do you think they look too much like luggage or too frumpy even for day time?

Wide belts worn high

February 9th, 2007 · No Comments

Wide, chunky belts have been hot since the summer 2006.  They started out as highly decorative accessories that were worn very low on the hips.  This autumn and winter we are seeing more plain looking wide belts that are worn very high up, often just under the bust.  I thought this looked a bit strange at first after the low worn phase. Now I love the high worn look!  I think it creates a beautiful definition and it’s also great for breaking up colours and patterns e.g. a plain black or a tartan dresses. I’m curious as to what other people think of wide belts worn high.

Jewellery – Chunky or Fine?

February 8th, 2007 · No Comments

The ethnic inspired jewellery from the summer season 2006 introduced the concept of chunky jewellery; chunky chains and ropes, and chunky charms and beads.  The chunky trend has infiltrated through the winter fashions and we are seeing a range of chunky, mainly gold, accessories. But what do you think of them? Are they decorative or overwhelming?  Do you find the more classic, subtle, fine jewellery to be more flattering?

Ease into the Volume look

February 7th, 2007 · No Comments

In fashion, the concept of volume is becoming prominent with stores displaying an increasing number of wide sleeved jackets and shirts, swing jackets, trapeze coats, full/puff-ball skirts, and big collars and hats.  These modern shapes will take some getting used to and many may be put off by the idea of appearing shapeless.  The way to ease into this style is to combine a voluminous item with a lean one, to convey a more flattering silhouette. Try skinny bottoms with capes and wide sleeved tops, or fitted shirts with puff skirts.  If you want to do bulky for both the bottom and top, use a belt to pinch in the waist and avoid looking swamped.   Those not daring enough to plunge into the volume scene head first, can dip in slowly by accessorising with bulky bags.

Volume in fashion – Will it work?

February 6th, 2007 · No Comments

Volume is one of the most recent styles to have been launched this season. It’s gradually becoming more accepted, but it has taken a while to get there; probably because it is one of the most dramatic and daring looks to have been introduced to the fashion scene in recent times.  Nevertheless, fashion experts are convinced that the volume style will be the leading silhouette of the late noughty years this decade. It certainly provides a modern alternative to the more historically influenced styles around, but will it become as ‘mainstream’ as the experts predict?

Grey is for the grind!

February 5th, 2007 · No Comments

Grey has dominated our stores this season, and is likely to stay until the spring.  What’s great about grey is the smart style it conveys, so it’s been a great season to expand many of our ‘working wardrobes’.  But is grey only good for the office? It’s hard to associate grey fashions with anything else, but I think with some combinations grey can be used to dress up and go out in.  I think it works well with tartan and with scarlet red, providing fun and eye catching contrasts.  Do you think there is a place for grey in the party scene, or should grey be kept for the grind?
